Grigor Outhouse
Pocono Mountains, PA

Pix64

After returning from World War II veteran Ray Grigor settled in Binghamton, NY.  He owned a piece of land in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania that he inherited from his dad, and in 1950 he built a small cottage on the Pocono property to "remember his roots."  The house and land were sold in the early 80's when Ray died.

In October, 2005, Ray's daughter Pat and her brother took a trip down memory lane to see if they could find the site of the old cottage.  Amazingly, it was still standing, but barely.  The cottage outhouse was also still intact.  Pat, in the foreground, remembers Pop making a big deal out of cutting a quarter moon in the side of the two-seater outhouse.  She recalls vividly how scared she and her older sister were going to the outhouse at night before bedtime.  She wrote that daytime trips to the outhouse weren't much better.  It was so easy to imagine snakes and spiders lurking "down there" beneath the seats.
